Communal Violence in South Sudan

The Sudd Institute, an independent research organization based in Juba, published a piece on 6 May 2013 titled "Managing the Communal Violence in Tonj East County."  The author is Augustino Ting Mayai, director of research at the Sudd Institute.

While communal violence has become commonplace in parts of South Sudan, it has been a special problem in Tonj East County in Warrap State.  Several factors contribute to the violence.  Disarmament has been ineffective in Tonj East County and there has been a lack of effective management of violence within the local justice system because some judges are biased.  The inability of the government to provide basic services also adds to the resort to violence.
