The leaders of Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa met 25-27 July at the BRICS Summit in Johannesburg. They reaffirmed a commitment to their understanding of the principles of democracy, inclusiveness, sovereign equality, and mutual respect. They rejected growing unilateralism (a swipe at the Trump administration) and called for strengthening multilateral institutions. Jagran Josh posted a summary of the Johannesburg Declaration by Sangeeta Krishnan on 27 July. The key themes are sustainable development, climate change, energy, agriculture, environment, demography, terrorism, international peace and security, Israel-Palestine crisis, arms race in outer space, trade, and corruption.
There was also a discussion of expanding the membership of BRICS according to a report by the Ghana News Agency dated 28 July 2018 titled "BRICS Expansion Sparks Debate" by Kester Kenn Klomegah. The idea was shelved.
