Moving Industry from China to Africa

Asia Dialogue posted on 17 October 2018 a commentary titled "Will Africa Be Able To Make Use of Chinese Development Finance for Sustainable Development?" by Marina Rudyak, Heidelberg University.

The author argues that the relocation of labor intensive industries from China to Africa offers the latter the prospect of a demographic dividend. But it will require Africa to pursue structural transformation and integration into global value chains. To be sustainable, it must also be linked to vocational training, cost-effective infrastructure that is environmentally and socially sustainable, and involves the strategic use of development financing.
