The China Africa Research Initiative published in April 2021 a study titled "Development Finance and Distributive Politics: Comparing Chinese and World Bank Finances in Sub-Saharan Africa" by Keyi Tang.
The study examines the role of donor interests and regime type in foreign finance allocation using geocoded data on China and the World Bank's grant and loan flows to 48 countries from 2000 to 2012. It found the more democratic a regime is, the more likely co-ethnic regions of the incumbent leader are to receive development finance.
