The Diplomat published on 7 January 2022 an article titled "China Looks to Play More Active Role in Horn of Africa Conflicts" by Shannon Tiezzi.
The article comments on the announcement by Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi during a visit to Kenya that China intends to appoint a special envoy for the Horn of Africa as the United States did nine months ago. The author adds "it's reasonable to view the new special envoy position as a prelude to Chinese efforts to help mediate the conflict" in Ethiopia.
Comment: While China has previously tried (and eventually gave up) efforts to mediate conflicts in Sudan and South Sudan, it is highly questionable that it will do much more in the case of the conflict in Ethiopia except exhort the need for peace and dialogue and support any effort by the African Union.
