The South African Institute of International Affairs published in January 2023 a study titled "China, Africa and the Market for Donkeys: Keeping the Cart Behind the Donkey" by Lauren Johnston.
China's demand for donkey hides, which are used to make an ancient health-related product, has led to a shortage of donkeys in China and sky-rocketing demand for Africa's donkeys. This has resulted in the emergence of illicit and even more inhumane and unhygienic cross-border and regional donkey trade. The paper offers policy suggestions that may help to create a donkey market that supports inclusive high quality, mutual objectives.
