Impact of Doctors' Strike in Ethiopia

 Ethiopia Insight published on 16 June 2025 a commentary titled "Anatomy of Defiance: Ethiopia's Medics Say Enough" by Worku Abera, Dawson College in Montreal.

A nationwide doctors' strike in Ethiopia has unsettled the government and raised fears other public servants may follow their example.  The strike is over both salaries and a demand for dignity, justice, and reform.

Horn of Africa Faces New Malaria Threat

 The New York Times published on 1 October 2023 an article titled "An Invasive Mosquito Threatens Catastrophe in Africa" by Stephanie Nolen.

The Anopheles stephensi malaria-carrying species of mosquito, which is resistant to all insecticides, has adapted to thrive in urban environments and survive in dry seasons. It is breeding across the continent and its spread is inevitable.

China-Africa Donkey Trade

 The South African Institute of International Affairs published in January 2023 a study titled "China, Africa and the Market for Donkeys: Keeping the Cart Behind the Donkey" by Lauren Johnston.  

China's demand for donkey hides, which are used to make an ancient health-related product, has led to a shortage of donkeys in China and sky-rocketing demand for Africa's donkeys.  This has resulted in the emergence of illicit and even more inhumane and unhygienic cross-border and regional donkey trade.  The paper offers policy suggestions that may help to create a donkey market that supports inclusive high quality, mutual objectives.

Eritrea-China Medical Cooperation

 Eritrea's Ministry of Information posted on 14 December 2022 a statement titled "Eritrea-China Medical Cooperation: A Quarter Century of Progress" by Fikrejesus Amahazion.

The article commemorates 25 years of Chinese medical teams assigned to Eritrea.  Since 1997, fifteen Chinese medical teams, comprising well over 200 doctors and health professionals, have worked in Eritrea.

China-Africa Military Medicine Conference

 China Military Online posted on 15 November 2022 an article titled "Military Medicine Conference of Second China-Africa Peace and Security Forum Held in Beijing" by Wang Xueyang and Zhang Dan.  

In mid-November, the People's Liberation Army organized a video conference attended by representatives of 21 African military health departments on the role of the military in responding to public health emergencies.  The conference was a follow on to the Second China-Africa Peace and Security Forum held on-line in July 2022.

Collapse of Health Care System in Ethiopia's Tigray Region

 Ethiopia Insight published on 26 January 2022 a commentary titled "Data Shows Siege and Destruction of Health System Are Causing Preventable Deaths in Tigray" by Hagos Godefay, head of Tigray health bureau.

According to the head of Tigray's health bureau, the civil war has resulted in the destruction of the health care system in Tigray Region.  As a result, children are dying primarily from malnutrition, neonatal causes, and infectious disease.

Most Hospitals and Clinics Not Functioning in Tigray Region

 Reuters published on 5 January 2022 an article titled "Blockade Killing Hospitalized Children in Ethiopia's War-torn Tigray, Doctors Say."

Doctors at the Ayder Referral Hospital in Tigray Region's capital of Mekelle say they are out of almost all supplies because of the blockade of the region by central government forces.  An estimated 80 to 90 percent of Tigray's hospitals and clinics are not functioning.

 ACCORD published on 8 September 2021 an analysis titled "China's Role in COVID-19 in Africa: Tuanjie (Solidarity) or Zhanlue (Strategy)" by Paul Nantulya, Africa Centre for Strategic Studies.

The author reviews China's support for Africa's battle against COVID-19 and argues it is based on both solidarity with Africa and an expectation of receiving something in return.

Ethiopia: COVID-19 and Politics

 Health Policy and Planning published on 5 August 2021 a study titled "Health and Politics in Pandemic Times: COVID-19 Responses in Ethiopia" by Marit Tolo Ostebo, Terje Ostebo, and Kjetil Tronvoll.

The study explores the relationship between health and politics in Tigray, Amhara, and Oromia Regional States from June to September 2020.  It concludes the degree of securitization and politicization differed between the regions and fluctuated over time.  In areas with strong opposition to political authorities, the COVID-19 mitigating efforts were--during the first phase of the pandemic--more politicized and securitized than in areas with less opposition.

China Close to Eliminating Malaria in Comoro Islands

 The China Africa Project posted on 18 September 2020 a report titled "Combatting Malaria in the Comoros Islands: How China Almost Got It Right" by Esther Ejiroghene Ajari, director of The TriHealthon, a youth-led nonprofit promoting health equity in Africa.  

Seven years after beginning a project to eliminate malaria from the three islands comprising the Comoro Islands, Moheli and Anjouan have been declared malaria-free.  The project is ongoing on Grand Comore.  The project is widely regarded as China's most successful health project in Africa.  There has been a controversy over the medication, Artequick, used to eliminate malaria.  Although approved by health agencies in China and the Comoros, it has not yet received certification by the World Health Organization.

 The Washington Post published on 10 August 2020 an obituary titled "Hawa Abdi, Trailblazing Physician Who Built a Haven for Somali Families, Dies at 73" by Harrison Smith.

Somali Dr. Hawa Abdi turned her farm on the outskirts of Mogadishu into a refuge and hospital for displaced Somalis, facing down militants and untold obstacles.

China's Health Diplomacy in Madagascar

The China-Africa Project published on 21 July 2020 an article titled "Health Diplomacy or Health Dependence: A Critical Assessment of China's Health Aid to Madagascar" by Paul Kadetz, University College London. 

The author concluded that although Sino-Malagasy health aid does not appear to have fostered a self-sufficient health care system independent of aid from China, a better way forward is needed.

Ethiopia and Malawi: Chinese Medical Teams and Knowledge Transfer

The Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies China Africa Research Initiative published in March 2020 a study titled "Chinese Medical Teams: Knowledge Transfer in Ethiopia and Malawi" by Allison Grande, Sara Fischer, and James Sayre.

The study explores Chinese medical teams in Ethiopia and Malawi to analyze the scale and effectiveness of knowledge transfer between team members and host country medical personnel. It concludes that only limited knowledge transfer results from the program. Systemic constraints, including language barriers and underdeveloped program management practices, limit the teams'ability to operate at their full potential as trainers and practitioners.

Rebuilding Sudan's Health System

The Lancet published on 18 January 2020 an article titled "Rebuilding Sudan's Health System: Opportunities and Challenges" by George Wharton, Omar E. Ali, Siddiq Khalil, Hatim Yagoub, and Elias Mossialos.

The new government in Sudan has inherited a health system that is ill-equipped to respond to growing and neglected needs, including depletion of medical staff following a brain drain. The authors argue the obvious solution is the introduction of a single-payer national health service.

Rhino Horn Smuggling to China and Vietnam

The Elephant Action League published in July 2017 a report titled "Grinding Rhino: An Undercover Investigation on Rhino Horn Trafficking in China and Vietnam" by Andrea Crosta, Kimberly Sutherland, and Chiara Talerico.

Continued consumer demand for rhino horn in China and Vietnam has created economic incentives for, and a resurgence of, poaching and trafficking in African countries. The report provides information on the rhino horn black market in China and how rhino horn is smuggled from Vietnam to China and then sold and distributed in China.

China-Africa Medical Cooperation

The Chinafrica Project posted on 19 August 2016 an article titled "From Aid to Business? Chinese Medical Companies Arrive in Africa" by Wang Yujue, a fellow at China House Kenya. He describes the increased engagement in Africa of Chinese pharmaceutical companies.
