Sudan Goes from Refugee Recipient to Refugee Producer

Just Security published on 8 June 2023 a commentary titled "The Sudan Conflict Is an Existential Crisis for Refugee Protection in Africa" by Chidi Odinkalu, Tufts University.

At the outbreak on 15 April 2023 of Sudan's war between the Sudan Armed Forces and paramilitary Rapid Support Forces, the country hosted 1.13 million refugees--the second largest population in Africa--from South Sudan, Eritrea, and Ethiopia.  The fighting in Sudan has now produced 385,000 refugees in neighboring countries and more than 1.2 million internally displaced persons.  Refugees from Sudan could reach 1 million soon.
