On 10 October, Sudan and Iran announced a resumption of diplomatic relations after a break of 7 years. When Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and landlocked Ethiopia join the BRICS on 1 January 2024, shipping through the Red Sea and Suez Canal will come under the control of BRICS and BRICS-friendly nations. By joining BRICS and reestablishing relations with Sudan, also a Red Sea littoral country, Iran strengthens its position in this critical region.
