UNESCO and China Join Forces to Advance Education in Africa

 UNESCO posted on 18 December 2025 an article titled "UNESCO at the Forefront of Partnership Development at 2025 China Africa Education Cooperation and Innovation Development Forum."

UNESCO strengthened China-Africa cooperation through a new education agreement, high-level artificial intelligence and technical and vocational education and training engagements, and strategic policy dialogue at the 2025 China-Africa Education Cooperation and Innovation Development Forum held in Wuhan, China.  

The African Union and a Stable Ethiopia

The Institute for Security Studies (ISS) published on 16 March 2018 a commentary titled "Why the African Union Needs a Stable Ethiopia" by Liesl Louw-Vaudran, ISS consultant.

While acknowledging that the African Union, which has its headquarters in Addis Ababa, has little ability to influence the internal political situation in Ethiopia, the author reports that the AU is increasingly concerned about anti-government protests in the country.

Ethiopia First Country to Benefit from Climate Fund

The African Development Bank announced on 26 August 2015 that Ethiopia is the first country to launch a project funded by the ClimDev Africa Special Fund (CDSF).  The 1 million Euro project will help Ethiopia cope with, and build resilience to, climate change by enhancing capacity in climate monitoring, data analysis, interpretation, forecasting, and dissemination for use in national decision-making.  CDSF is a joint project of the African Development Bank, African Union Commission, and United Nations Economic Commission for Africa.

2012 Economic Report on Africa

The UN Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) has released its Economic Report on Africa 2012. It concluded that since the beginning of this century, African countries have shown strong economic growth owing to improved economic management, a generally hospitable international environment and rising prices for their commodity and other strategic minerals.

Still, UNECA warns that African countries should not rest on their laurels. The sources of Africa's growth have changed very little over the years. Agriculture and natural resources remain the main drivers and African economies have not diversified in any meaningful way. Moreover, job creation has not matched growth and employment needs.

The report is divided into the following chapters:

1. Developments in the world economy and implications for Africa;

2. Economic and social developments in Africa and prospects for 2012;

3. Africa as a pole of global growth;

4. Unleashing Africa's development capacity; and

5. Mobilizing resources for structural transformation.
