UN Chief Says Ethiopian Peace Deal Making Progress

 Xinhua published on 3 December 2022 an article titled "UN Chief Says Implementation of Ethiopia's Peace Deal 'Extremely Promising'."

UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres said in Addis Ababa that implementation of the Africa Union-brokered peace deal signed by the Ethiopian government and the Tigray People's Liberation Front is "extremely promising."

Head of African Union Commission Calls for Immediate Ceasefire in Ethiopia

 The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Moussa Faki Mahamat, on 15 October 2022 called "for an immediate, unconditional ceasefire and the resumption of humanitarian services" as he expressed "grave concern" over reports of increased fighting in the Tigray Region of Ethiopia.  He also called for a recommitment to dialogue in South Africa under the leadership of the African Union.

Ethiopia: Is Tigray Ready for African Union-led Peace Talks without Preconditions?

 Aljazeera published on 11 September 2022 an article titled "Ethiopia's Tigray Rebels Say Ready for AU-led Peace Talks."

Ethiopia's Tigray People's Liberation Front announced on 11 September that it is prepared to participate in peace talks with the central government led by the African Union.  It is also ready to accept an immediate cease fire and made no mention of the four preconditions that it cited several days ago.

Is Russia Really Taking Steps to Allow Grain Exports to Africa?

 South Africa's Institute for Security Studies published on 10 June 2022 a commentary titled "Africa Must Separate the Wheat from Russia's Geopolitical Chaff" by Peter Fabricius.

Vladimir Putin's meeting with the chairperson of the African Union and the head of the African Union Commission on the Africa food crisis ended without clarity on the next steps Russia will take to free up the export of Ukrainian and Russian grain.

Is the African Union Even Neutral on Putin's Invasion of Ukraine?

 Aljazeera published on 28 May 2022 a commentary titled "Can the African Union Be a Neutral Arbiter of Peace in Ukraine?" by Tafi Mhaka.  

The author questions whether the African Union has the capacity to even be neutral on Russia's invasion of Ukraine inasmuch as some African leaders are afraid of offending Vladimir Putin.

The African Union and a Stable Ethiopia

The Institute for Security Studies (ISS) published on 16 March 2018 a commentary titled "Why the African Union Needs a Stable Ethiopia" by Liesl Louw-Vaudran, ISS consultant.

While acknowledging that the African Union, which has its headquarters in Addis Ababa, has little ability to influence the internal political situation in Ethiopia, the author reports that the AU is increasingly concerned about anti-government protests in the country.
