USAID Cuts Resulting in Deaths in Sudan

The Washington Post published on 29 June 2025 an article titled "In Sudan, Where Children Clung to Life, Doctors Say USAID Cuts Have Been Fatal" by Katharine Houreld.

Following the dismantlement of USAID and cuts in support for community soup kitchens and the end of critical medical supplies in Sudan, more Sudanese are dying.  The World Health Organization estimates that 5 million Sudanese may lose access to lifesaving health services as a result of the US cuts.

Military Rule Is Not the Answer in Sudan

Foreign Policy published on 8 May 2025 a commentary titled "Military Rule Is Not the Answer to Sudan's Conflict" by Suha Musa.

Sudan: Slashing of US Aid Contributes to Humanitarian Disaster

The New York Times published on 19 April 2025 an article and photo spread titled "Trump's Aid Cuts Hit the Hungry in a City of Shellfire and Starvation" by Declan Walsh and Ivor Prickett.

Within days of the dismantling of USAID by the Trump administration, over 300 soup kitchens run by Emergency Response Rooms, a network of democracy activists turned volunteer aid workers, were forced to close.  Aid groups on the ground in Sudan say the flow of American money stopped two months ago and USAID officials who helped make the payments have been fired.

Sudan Develops Local Mechanisms to Help Avert Humanitarian Catastophe

Foreign Policy published on 7 February 2025 an article titled "Sudan's New Model for Aid Distribution" by Kelsey Norman and Salah Ben Hammou, both at Rice University.

Local communities in Sudan have created emergency response rooms to distribute food and critical supplies in areas where international agencies and non-governmental organizations are not able to operate.  While this helps solve the delivery problem at the local level, Sudan's humanitarian crisis remains dependent on international aid, which will be negatively impacted by the dismantling of USAID.

Sudan: Warring Factions Target Civil Society

Aljazeera published on 1 April 2024 an article titled "Are Sudan's Civil Society Activists Being Targeted by Both Warring Sides?" by Mat Nashed.

There are recent reports that both the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and Sudan Armed Forces (SAF) are targeting and sometimes arresting civil society activists who operate soup kitchens for the poor and provide other help in their "emergency response rooms."  The goal of the RSF and the SAF apparently is to maintain control over all elements of civil society.
