Will Economic Sanctions Impact Ethiopian Conflict?

Project Syndicate published on 26 January 2022 a commentary titled "Economic Sanctions Won't Bring Peace to Ethiopia" by Biniam Bedasso, Center for Global Development, and Tilahun Emiru, Lake Forest College.

The US decision at the beginning of 2022 to remove Ethiopia from eligibility to the Africa Growth and Opportunity Act will result in the loss of preferential access to a market (mostly apparel and leather products) worth $240 million, which is equivalent to about 9 percent of Ethiopia's total exports.  The authors argue there is little theoretical support for the view that this will influence Ethiopia's domestic political behavior.
