International efforts to combat Houthi rocket and drone attacks on Red Sea shipping resulted in a security vacuum in the Gulf of Aden, which Somali pirates were quick to fill. The Indian Navy ramped up its deployment from 2 to 12 ships to combat Somali piracy. It is also using this development to demonstrate that the Indian Navy, not the Chinese Navy, is taking the initiative to counter this challenge.
