China's Belt and Road Initiative in North Africa

The European Council on Foreign Relations (ECFR) published in June 2017 a series of articles titled "China and the Mediterranean: Open for Business?"

One of the articles is titled "Chinese Perceptions of Country Risks in North Africa" by Abigael Vasselier, program coordinator for ECFR's Asia and China Program.

The author concludes that the Belt and Road Initiative generates favorable conditions for Chinese investment in the North African region. The most significant barriers to real improvement of the business environment in the region are political turmoil and social instability, which generate risks for bilateral trade, direct investments, and safety in oil and gas infrastructure.
