The International Crisis Group published on 24 October 2018 an analysis titled "China Expands Its Peace and Security Footprint in Africa" by Michael Kovrig.
The author makes the point that China's growing role in African security supports its economic statecraft and commercial interests, helps professionalize China's military and protect its citizens there, and furthers its ambitions to be a major power with global influence.
