China's Huawei Expansion into Africa Raises Security Questions

The Epoch Times, a multi-language newspaper with headquarters in New York, published on 20 January 2019 an article titled "Huawei's Expansion in Africa Comes under Scrutiny" by Frank Fang.

The Chinese telecommunications giant, Huawei, entered the African market in 1999 and has become a major player in its telecoms infrastructure. Huawei helped build more than fifty 3G networks in thirty-six African countries and is now trying to monopolize 5G technology and cloud data storage. Although African governments do not seem to be concerned about potential espionage considerations, American sources are sounding alarm bells.

This article preceded by several days a front page story in The New York Times dated 26 January 2019 and titled "America Pushes Allies to Fight Huawei in New Arms Race with China" by David E. Sanger, Julian E. Barnes, Raymond Zhong, and Marc Santora. While not focused on Africa, the article raises many of the same issues.
