Russia and China in Africa: Allies or Rivals?

The Carnegie Moscow Center published on 25 October 2019 a commentary titled "Russia and China in Africa: Allies or Rivals?" by Vita Spivak, who works with a credit rating agency and was previously at the Carnegie Moscow Center.

The author concludes in the aftermath of the Russia-Africa summit at Sochi that Moscow and Beijing give the impression they are working together in Africa. Except for voting along similar lines on African issues in the United Nations, Spivak says there is no evidence of close collaboration. Russia cannot compete with China in terms of the scale of its influence in Africa, and Moscow's efforts to make inroads there do not alarm Beijing.
