The Brenthurst Foundation published in June 2021 an analysis titled "The Plough and the Kalashnikov: Ethiopia after the Election" by Greg Mills.
The author argues that Ethiopia's recent election could yet prove the start of a democratic transition if Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed is willing to make concessions to back his rhetoric. There is now a need for an inclusive national dialogue to address the constitutional tension between the powers of a unitary state and ethno-nationalist provinces.
