The US Representative to the United Nations, Linda Thomas-Greenfield, spelled out on 8 July 2021 the US position on the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD). The US called for a "balanced and equitable solution" to the filling and operation of the GERD in a process led by the African Union and supported by South Africa, the EU, and the US. The US reaffirmed its commitment to work with Egypt, Ethiopia, and Sudan to ensure that the AU-led negotiations resume with urgency.
