Military Africa published on 11 March 2024 an article titled "Africa's Arms Imports Decline by Over Half in a Decade, SIPRI Reports."
African nations reduced their arms imports by 52 percent during the period 2019-2023 compared with 2014-2018, due mainly to sharp reductions by Algeria and Morocco. From 2019-2023, Russia was the leading arms supplier to all of Africa, responsible for 24 percent, followed by the United States at 16 percent, China at 13 percent, and France at 10 percent.
Sub-Saharan Africa accounted for only 2.2 percent of Africa wide arms imports during 2019-2023. China accounted for 19 percent of the imports and Russia 17 percent. Both China and Russia experienced sharp reductions in their exports to Sub-Saharan Africa, China's falling by 23 percent and Russia's by 44 percent compared to 2014-2018.
