USAID Dismantlement Harms Uganda's Health Care Program

 The Pulitzer Center posted on 12 December 2025 an article titled "Pulled Lifelines: Uganda's Mental Health System Scrambles after U.S. Aid Freeze" by Shawn Bayrd.

The Trump administration early this year froze support for Uganda's USAID and PEPFAR health programs.  The funding freeze has had a devastating impact on Uganda's ability to manage its mental health program.  

The Mental Health Impact of South Sudan's Conflict

Amnesty International published on 6 July 2016 a report titled "'Our Hearts Have Gone Dark': The Mental Health Impact of South Sudan's Conflict." It is available in English and Arabic.

The report describes the serious mental health impact of South Sudan's conflict to highlight the urgency that needs to be given to mental health services. It is based on interviews with 161 internally displaced South Sudanese, UN officials, donors, NGO representatives, and international and South Sudanese mental health professionals.

The Lancet published on 30 May 2015 an article titled "Slowly and Steadily, Somaliland Builds Its Health System" by Sharmila Devi, reporting from Hargeisa.

Mental Health Research in Ethiopia

Professor Atalay Alem, Department of Psychiatry at Addis Ababa University, has posted an in depth study on mental health research in Ethiopia. This is a topic that has received little attention over the years but is deserving of more. I found the paper on the Toronto Addis Ababa Academic Collaboration website.
