The Tony Blair Institute for Global Change published on 23 March 2022 a major paper titled "Security, Soft Power and Regime Support: Spheres of Russian Influence in Africa" by Emman el-Badawy, Sandun Munasinghe, Audu Bulama Bukarti, and Beatrice Bianchi.
Africa represents an attractive arena to Russia in which it can pursue its interests with limited economic and political costs. There are important reasons why Russia has so easily expanded its influence on the continent so quickly. This paper explores what is known about Russia's interests, capabilities and strategic objectives for Africa today, and what Western leaders and African leaders should understand about this growing sphere of Russian influence.
