Human Rights Watch Calls for Renewal of International Commission of Human Rights Experts on Ethiopia

 In December 2021, the United Nations Human Rights Council established a mechanism to investigate for one year allegations and abuses of international human rights law, humanitarian law, and refugee law in Ethiopia committed since 3 November 2020 by all parties to the conflict.   

Human Rights Watch called on 26 September 2022 for a renewal of the mandate of the International Commission of Human Rights Experts on Ethiopia (ICHREE).  It argued that human rights abuses are continuing in Ethiopia and some of the earlier atrocities have not yet been adequately investigated.

Western Governments Comment on Joint UN-Ethiopian Human Rights Investigation

The US Department of State released on 6 November 2021 a "Joint Statement on the Release of the OHCHR-EHRC Joint Investigation."

It reflects the view of 16 Western governments on the joint human rights investigation published by the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights and the Ethiopian Human Rights Commission concerning human rights abuses and atrocities in Ethiopia.

 UN News published on 13 September 2021 an article titled "Multiple Reports of Alleged Human Rights Violations in Tigray."

UN human rights chief, Michelle Bachelet, deplored "multiple and severe reports of alleged gross violations of human rights, humanitarian and refugee law" committed by all parties to the conflict in Tigray.

Sexual Violence in Tigray Region: How Accurate is Reporting?

 Foreign Policy published on 27 August 2021 an article titled "U.N. Officials Downplayed Sexual Violence in Ethiopia in Leaked Call" by Robbie Gramer and Colum Lynch.

In a leaked phone conversation in March 2021, UN officials on the ground in Ethiopia described as "media hype" some of the reports of sexual violence in Tigray Region.  Other UN officials insisted many of the sexual violence reports accurately reflected the situation and urged that one leaked phone call did not reduce the importance of the problem.

G-7 Statement on Ethiopia's Tigray Region; Ethiopia Tries to Pre-empt Statement

 The G-7 Summit Communique issued on 13 June 2021 contains a paragraph (no. 54) that deals with Tigray Region of Ethiopia.  It condemns ongoing atrocities, including sexual violence, calls for an immediate cease fire, unimpeded humanitarian access, and the immediate withdrawal of Eritrean forces. 

Politico posted on 12 June 2021 an article titled "Ethiopia Tires to Pre-empt G7 Criticism over Tigray" by David M. Herszenhorn.

Ethiopia's deputy prime minister tried to pre-empt the G-7 statement before it was agreed upon by demanding that the G-7 "desist from these unhelpful activities."  He added "what the country needs at this critical moment is the support of friends and partners."
