Chinese Mediation in the Horn of Africa: Open for Business

The South China Morning Post published on 21 June 2022 an article titled "China's Horn of Africa Envoy Tells Regional Peace Conference He Is Ready to Mediate Disputes" by Jevans Nyabiage.

China's special envoy for the Horn of Africa, Xue Bing, said at the opening in Addis Ababa of a two day regional peace conference "I am read to provide mediation efforts for the peaceful settlement of disputes based on the will of countries in the region."

Comment:  China has offered to mediate other African conflicts, but this is the most publicized and overt effort.  Good luck with proceeding on the basis of "the will of countries in this region."  Both their internal differences and external policies often pull them in diametrically different directions, making it exceedingly difficult to operate on the basis of their will.
