Cutting Foreign Aid Is a Costly Mistake

 The Washington Post published on 17 June 2025 a commentary titled "The Retreat from Aid Is a Costly Mistake" by Eduardo Porter.

While the Trump administration has thrown foreign aid into the woodchipper, other Western countries including the UK, Belgium, Finland, France, Germany, Netherlands, Norway, and Sweden have cut development assistance budgets.  Their cuts have not been as dramatic as the US dismantlement of USAID, but the author explains why these changes are a mistake.

China Competes with Kenya and Five Others for Head of International Maritime Organization

 Lloyd's List published on 3 April 2023 an article titled "IMO Leadership Race Wide Open as China and Finland Vie for Power" by Richard Meade.

The International Maritime Organization will hold an election in July for the position of secretary general to head the group.  Candidates from China, Kenya, Turkiye, Bangladesh, Panama, Dominica, and Finland are seeking the position.

China's Huawei Launches 5G Networks in South Africa and Kenya

 Reuters published on 27 October 2022 an article titled "South Africa's Telkom Launches 5G Network with Huawei."  Telcom launched its 5G high-speed internet network using Huawei technology to compete with larger Vodacom and MTN and smaller Rain in the 5G race.  

Business Daily published on 28 October 2022 an article titled "Safaricom 5G Users to Pay Higher Mobile Data Tariffs."  Kenya's Safaricom has become the first telecommunications company in East Africa to commercially launch 5G high-speed internet service with infrastructure built by China's Huawei and Finland's Nokia.
