Chinese Authors Argue China Is Better at Industrializing Africa Than Is the West

Wenhua Zongheng: Quarterly Journal of Chinese Thought published in October 2023 an edition titled "China-Africa Relations in the Belt and Road Era."

It contains the following articles:

--Editorial: China and Africa's Attempts at Industrialization by Grieve Chelwa, Tricontinental Institute for Social Research

--How Can China Contribute to the Continent's Economic Development? by Zhou Jinyan, Shanghai International Studies University

--China's Belt and Road Initiative and African Industrialization by Tang Xiaoyang, Tsinghua University

The articles by the Chinese scholars essentially argue that the West has failed to offer Africa a successful model for industrialization and China can do it better.

A Provincial China Model for Africa

The South African Institute of International Affairs published in July 2023 a paper titled "The Hunan Model: China's Zone for the China-Africa Future" by Lauren Johnston.

The paper finds that an emerging Hunan model, named after the central south Chinese province in China, builds upon its comparative strengths in agriculture, construction machinery, and mining and metallurgy, as well as its recent role in poverty eradication.  It may offer a model for advancing China-Africa economic ties.  The paper offers conclusions on how African countries can make the most of the model for their own development.

Chinese Manufacturing Investments in Africa

The China-Africa Research Initiative (CARI) at Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) published in August 2018 a study titled "What Kinds of Chinese 'Geese' Are Flying To Africa? Evidence from Chinese Manufacturing Firms" by Deborah Brautigam, SAIS, Tang Xiaoyang, Tsinghua University, and Xia Ying, S.J.D. candidate at Harvard Law School.

The paper provides an analysis of the nature of Chinese manufacturing investments in Africa, focusing on Ethiopia, Ghana, Nigeria, and Tanzania. It explores the varieties of existing Chinese manufacturing investment and the sectors into which Chinese companies are investing. Chinese manufacturing investment in Africa is expanding rapidly but the official data on investment approvals significantly overstate the actual number of investments in operation.

CARI published a policy brief on the same subject.
