Ethiopian and Tigrayan Forces Blame Each Other for Aid Blockage

Federal Ethiopian officials and Tigrayans are blaming each other for the failure of aid to reach Tigray Region following the announcement of a humanitarian truce reached a week ago.

Will Ethiopia's Truce Hold Up?

 The Council on Foreign Relations blog posted on 28 March 2022 a commentary titled "Ethiopia Truce an Uncertain Prospect" by Michelle Gavin.

Last week, the Ethiopian federal government announced a truce in its conflict with Tigrayan forces, who agreed to accept it.  However, the truce is based on trust from both sides and some conditionality, putting into question its success.  

Humanitarian Truce in War-ravaged Tigray

 The New York Times published on 24 March 2022 an article titled "Ethiopia Declares 'Humanitarian Truce' in War-Ravaged Tigray Region" by Abdi Latif Dahir and Simon Marks.

The Ethiopian government announced on 24 March a "humanitarian truce" in Tigray region where millions are hungry and food has not been delivered since December.  The hope is this will lead to a sustainable peace.  

Comment on Diplomatic Recognition Truce between Beijing and Taipei

Since 2008, Beijing and Taipei have had an informal truce on the issue of diplomatic recognition by other countries.  About 20 countries globally still recognize Taiwan.  Until last month when Gambia broke diplomatic relations with Taiwan, four countries in Africa recognized Taiwan; now it is three.  It is intriguing, however, that Gambia and China have not established diplomatic relations in the wake of the break with Taiwan.

In a recent interview with Liberty Times (the sister paper of the Taipei Times), Academia Sinica research fellow Lin Cheng-yi commented on the state of the informal truce between China and Taiwan, especially the impact on it by Gambia's break in relations with Taiwan.  The interview appeared on 1 December 2013 in a piece titled "Ma Shares Blame for Split with the Gambia."
