We Need the Voice of America Now More than Ever

 Foreign Policy published on 26 March 2025 a commentary titled "We Need the Voice of America Now More than Ever" by Jeanne Shaheen, Democratic Senator from New Hampshire.

The Voice of America and its affiliated services such as Radio Free Europe and Radio Free Asia have been a front line of defense for the United States in opposition to the firehose of misinformation from our adversaries.  This is the time to strengthen these services, not abolish them.

Houthis Claim Attacks on US Navy Carrier Strike Group

 The US Naval Institute News published on 17 January 2025 an article titled "Houthis Claim 7th Strike on Carrier Truman as Red Sea Conflict Continues" by Heather Mongilio.

Houthis in Yemen announced that they had carried out their 7th attack on the Harry S. Truman Carrier Strike Group in the Red Sea.  While the US has not officially responded to these claims, they appear to fall in the category of misinformation.

Sudanese Youth Groups Make Positive Contribution

 The US Institute of Peace published on 2 May 2023 a commentary titled "Amid Sudan's Chaos, Youth Groups Work for Peace" by Rachel Palermo and Paula Porras Reyes.

In spite of the current violence in Sudan, youth-led groups are combatting misinformation, providing humanitarian aid, and organizing crowd funding to secure food and medicine.

China and Russia's Propaganda Assault on Africa

 The Daily Maverick published on 27 March 2023 a commentary titled "Media Capture and Information Laundering--China and Russia's Propaganda Assault on Africa" by Herman Wasserman, Stellenbosch University.  

The governments of China and Russia have been working hard to frame information in Africa to fit their policies and interests.  Increasingly, this communication includes fake narratives and amplified conspiracy theories.

Ethiopia: Disinformation Campaigns Hinder Peace Process

 Ethiopia Insight published on 22 October 2022 a commentary titled "The Battle of Narratives Around the War in Tigray" by an anonymous author.

All sides to the conflict in Tigray Region are guilty of manipulating information to fit their preferred narrative.  The message has also varied depending if it is transmitted in English for the international audience or in a local language for Ethiopians.  Reconciliation can only begin once the disinformation campaigns come to an end.
