The New York Times published an article on 24 December 2019 titled "Pentagon Eyes Africa Drawdown as First Step in Global Troop Shift" by Helene Cooper, Thomas Gibbons-Neff, Charlie Savage, and Eric Schmitt.

The US has between 6,000 and 7,000 troops in Africa, mostly in the Horn of Africa and West Africa.
