Islamic State Branch in Somalia Goes Multilingual

 The April 2023 edition of the CTC Sentinel includes an article titled "The Islamic State Somalia Propaganda Coalition's Regional Language Push" by Lucas Webber and Daniele Garofalo.

The branch of the Islamic State in Somalia is trying to expand its reach by providing propaganda in Somali, Oromo, Amharic, and Swahili languages.

Ethiopia: Ethnic Claims in Western Tigray

 Ethiopia Insight published on 17 November 2022 a commentary titled "Amhara Nationalist Claims over Western Tigray Are a Smokescreen for Ethnic Cleansing" by Jan Nyssen, University of Ghent.  

The author argues that as many as 723,000 Tigrayans have been forced from Western Tigray by Amhara militia, the Ethiopian National Defense Force, and Eritrean forces.  Parts of Western Tigray have been disputed for centuries by Tigrayans and Amhara.  The author sheds some historical light on the dispute.

Ethiopian Hate Speech on Social Media

 The BBC posted on 23 November 2021 an account titled "Ethiopia's Tigray Conflict: What Are Facebook and Twitter Doing about Hate Speech?" by Peter Mwai.

Both pro and anti-government users of Facebook and Twitter have posted hateful and inflammatory content in Amharic, Afan Oromo, Somali, and Tigrinya.  Social media platforms are caught in the middle as they try to manage these postings.

Is There an Ideological Basis to Conflict in Tigray?

 Ethiopia Insight published on 17 December 2020 a commentary titled "Conflict in Tigray Is about TPLF, Not Ethnic Federalism" by Teshome M. Borago, accountant and political analyst.  

The author argues that if there is an ideological basis to the conflict in Tigray, it is not the TPLF's commitment to ethnic federalism, but rather the TPLF's opposition to a new multiparty and pluralist Ethiopia where its political power monopoly will be threatened.

Ethiopia: Two Book Reviews

The American Interest published in March 2020 two book reviews titled "The Long Ethiopian Century" by James Barnett, journalist covering East Africa.

The author reviewed two recent books about Ethiopia: The Wife's Tale: A Personal History by Aida Edemariam and The Shadow King: A Novel by Maaza Mengiste. The Wife's Tale is a personal history of the 97-year life of the author's Ethiopian grandmother. The Shadow King is a novel based on a female resistance fighter during the Italo-Ethiopian war.

Beijing Review published on 31 March 2016 an article titled "Finding the Right Word" by Sudeshna Sarkar, an editorial consultant for ChinAfrica magazine.

The article offers a rare look at the teaching of African languages in China, especially at the Beijing Foreign Studies University.
