China-Africa Ties after 9th FOCAC

Boston University's Global Development Policy Center posted on 15 October 2024 an analysis titled "Back in Action: The Ninth Forum on China-Africa Cooperation Sees Renewed Relations and Development Prospects" by Tianyi Wu.

This is an analysis of the recently completed 9th FOCAC held in Beijing.  This iteration of FOCAC suggested that China seeks to adjust its approach to Africa by forging strategic partnerships, compartmentalizing financial tools for development projects, and aligning its engagement with regional multilateral initiatives.

How the US Can Compete with China in Africa

Foreign Policy published on 25 September 2024 an analysis titled "The U.S. Has a Better Offer for Africa than Debt" by Henry Tugendhat.

The author argues that the United States should not even try to compete with China on the amount of loans it offers to the continent. Rather, it should expand popular trade agreements such as the Africa Growth and Opportunity Act or the Generalized System of Preferences.

China and Russia in Africa

The Daily Maverick published on 5 August 2020 an opinion piece titled "China and Russia in Africa: Development Allies or Geopolitical Opportunists?" by Nina Callaghan, Dzvinka Kachur, and Mark Swilling.

The authors write that China's and Russia's interests in Africa are strategic to their national objectives, have been carefully planned, and have become more sophisticated and deliberate over the past two decades.  Russia's trade and investment in Africa are far below that of China's and focused heavily in the energy sector.  The authors conclude that Africa must come to the realization that it is in the continent's interests to negotiate fairer agreements that do not leave them saddled with more debt or the potential loss of national assets.
