Ethiopia: Tigray Region is Unrecognizable

 Ethiopia Insight published on 30 January 2024 a commentary titled "Four Years Later, Tigray Is Unrecognizable" by an anonymous author.  

This report is based on a visit by an Ethiopian to his/her home in Tigray Region during October 2023.  The civil service barely functions.  Ethnic relations are complicated and often tense.  Grieving remains widespread and unemployment is high.

Podcast on Life in Capital of Tigray Region Today

 British public broadcast service Channel 4 News posted on 13 January 2023 a 7 minute podcast titled "Will Ethiopia Peace Deal Improve Situation in Tigray?"

The podcast looks at the current situation in Mekelle, capital of Tigray Region, and the impact of the civil war and ceasefire on life in the city.

Ethiopian Airstrikes Resume in Tigray Region

 Agence France Presse published on 28 October 2021 an article titled "Ethiopia Air Strike on Tigray Kills 6: Hospital, Rebel Sources."

The Ethiopian Air Force resumed airstrikes on the capital of Tigray Region on 28 October.  The central government said it hit an industrial site in Mekelle; the TPLF said it was a residential area.

New Airstrikes on Tigray's Capital and Flight from Amhara City

 CNN published on 22 October 2021 an article titled "Mekelle Struck, Residents Flee Amhara as Ethiopia Battle Intensifies" by Bethlehem Feleke.

The Ethiopian Air Force launched new airstrikes on Mekelle, the capital of Tigray Region, while TPLF ground forces approached Dessie in Amhara Region, resulting in residents fleeing the city.

Ethiopian Air Force Strikes Again in Tigrayan Capital

 Reuters published on 20 October 2021 an article titled "Air Strike Hits Capital of Ethiopia's Tigray for Second Time This Week."  The Associated Press published on 20 October 2021 an article titled "New Airstrikes Hit Capital of Ethiopia's Tigray Region" by Cara Anna.  

The Ethiopian Air Force conducted a third attack on Mekelle on 19 October, apparently trying to hit a factory used to repair arms.

 AFP published on 18 October 2021 a story titled "'Deadly' Airstrikes Hit Capital of Ethiopia's Tigray" by Robbie Corey-Boulet. 

The story confirms at least two airstrikes on Mekelle, the capital of Tigray Region, by Ethiopia's Air Force.

Ethiopian Aircraft Bomb Capital of Tigray Region

 The BBC published on 18 October 2021 an article titled "Tigray: Ethiopian Government Admits Mekelle Airstrike."

The Ethiopian government expanded the war in Ethiopia by acknowledging that its aircraft bombed Mekelle, the capital of Tigray Region, on 18 October.

First Hand Account from Mekelle, Ethiopia

 Al Jazeera published on 14 December 2020 an article titled "Ethiopia's Tigray War: A Doctor's Account of Mekelle's Plight" by Lucy Kassa.

This is the report of an anonymous doctor who served at Mekelle's main hospital until 7 December.  It offers a desperate account of the situation at the hospital and in Mekelle generally.

Ethiopia: Conflict in Tigray Not Over

 The Washington Post published on 4 December 2020 an article titled "Ethiopia's War in Tigray Shows No Signs of Abating Despite Government's Victory Claims" by Max Bearak.  

The article describes continuing conflict in Tigray region with the TPLF and its supporters apparently taking refuge in the more mountainous parts of the state.  There is no indication the conflict will come to a quick end.

Avoiding a Bloodbath in Ethiopia

 The International Crisis Group (ICG) posted on 27 November 2020 a plea titled "Avoiding a Bloodbath in Ethiopia's Mekelle."

As fighting between central government forces and the TPLF nears Mekelle, the capital of Tigray Region, the ICG urges Addis Ababa to pause hostilities while all sides minimize harm to civilians and the African Union steps up efforts to avert further bloodshed.

 The Australian Broadcasting Corporation ran on 23 November 2020 a six minute segment on Ethiopia titled "Ethiopia on Brink of Civil War."  The interview with me focused on the current military situation between the central government forces and the Tigray People's Liberation Front in Tigray Region.

Investment Study for Mekelle, Ethiopia

The Millennium Cities Initiative (MCI), an initiative of the Earth Institute at Columbia University, in cooperation with the UN Development Program recently published an 83-page study titled "Invest in Ethiopia: Focus Mekelle."

This study covers one of the eleven cities in eight African countries in an effort to attract more foreign direct investment. 

The other cities in the project are Accra and Kumasi, Ghana; Kisumu, Kenya; Blantyre, Malawi; Bamako and Segou, Mali; Akure and Kaduna, Nigeria; Louga, Senegal; and Tabora, Tanzania.
