Turkey Is Building a Spaceport in Somalia

 The Economist posted on 6 February 2025 an article titled "Turkey Is Building a Spaceport in Somalia."

The Turkish Space Agency was founded in 2018, and in 2021 President Recep Erdogan announced a ten-year plan for space, including home-made satellites and a moon landing.  In December 2024, the government began work on a spaceport in Somalia, a project that has been projected to cost $350 million.  Space is a matter of national prestige for Erdogan, but it is also an important auxiliary to the booming Turkish defense industry.

Sudan's Strategic Partnership with Turkey

 The Middle East Institute posted on 20 July 2022 an analysis titled "Turkey and Sudan: An Enduring Relationship?" by Jihad Mashamoun.

Sudan has a longstanding strategic partnership with Turkey that has survived regime change.  Persistent protests in Sudan that might result in full civilian rule would take Sudan's strategic partnership with Turkey into uncharted waters.

Turkey Returns (Again) to Africa

 Aljazeera published on 16 October 2021 an article titled "As Erdogan Set for Another Tour, Turkey Deepens Ties with Africa" by Mucahid Durmaz.

Turkish President Recip Tayyip Erdogan is visiting Angola, Nigeria, and Togo, a trip that precedes the Turkey-Africa Business Summit later this month and the Third Turkey-Africa Summit in December.

The article summarizes Turkey's outreach to Africa and concludes that the motives of its policy are not so clear.

Agence France Presse published on 2 March 2016 an article titled "Erdogan Says Turkey 'Ready' to Fight Terrorism in Nigeria."  It comments on President Recip Erdogan's visit to Nigeria, Ghana, and Guinea and Turkey's effort to expand relations in Africa.
