Africa's Most Popular Chinese Phones Pose Tracking Problem

Of the 84 million smartphones shipped to Africa in 2025, more than 40 million were made by China's Transsion, a Shenzhen-based manufacturer that owns the Tecno, Infinix, and Itel brands.  New research has decrypted the phones and found a built-in tracking system that reports a user's precise location, which apps they use, how much data each app consumes, and the moment an app switches on the camera.  These data are tied to roughly 14 permanent device identifiers that a user cannot reset.  This creates a common thread linking every captured event back to the exact same handset over its entire lifespan.

While other smartphones also collect data, Transsion has not been transparent in what its handsets are doing.

China's Transsion Adds Electric Motorcycles to Its Smartphone Dominance in Africa

 Launch Base Africa published on 22 June 2026 an article titled "NewTrails Capital, Backed by Africa's Leading Smartphone Manufacturer, Invests $55M in EV Startup Spiro."

China's Transsion Holdings, Africa's biggest smartphone seller, currently commands nearly half of the continent's market.  Through its stake in a Chinese growth-stage fund called NewTrails Capital, Transsion is investing $55 million in Spiro, Africa's largest electric vehicle and battery-swapping company.  For Spiro, the relationship opens doors to Chinese suppliers that could be decisive as it scales.  

China's Digital Program in Africa

 Foreign Policy Watchdog posted on 20 February 2026 an article titled "The Shifting Sands of Influence: China's Strategic Investment in Africa's Digital Infrastructure."

Chinese companies such as Huawei and ZTE currently control about 40 percent of Africa's internet bandwidth and hold over 65 percent of smartphone market share in key African countries.  It is questionable if the West can respond effectively.  China may shape the continent's digital destiny.

Summary of Africa-China Trade

 The Nanyang Technological University published on 30 January 2026 an article titled "China-Africa Trade Hits Record US$348bn as Deficit Balloons."

This is a nice summary of Africa-China trade since 2021, emphasizing increasing Chinese value-added exports to Africa and raw materials dominating African exports to China.  There are structural issues that inhibit African value-added exports to China along with Chinese non-tariff barriers.

Chinese Companies Are Now Number One and Two Smartphone Vendors in Nigeria

 Benjamindada.com posted on 14 March 2024 an article titled "How Xiaomi Overthrew Samsung in Nigeria's Smartphone Wars" by Andrew Christian.  

Chinese-owned Xiaomi has passed South Korean-owned Samsung as the second most preferred smartphone brand in Nigeria, Africa's largest IT market.  Chinese-owned Transsion remains in first place in Nigeria with 66 percent of the smartphone market.  Transsion is the leading smartphone product in Africa.  Samsung remains the second largest vendor in Africa.  

Drop in Chinese Smartphone Sales to Africa and Middle East

 Counterpoint posted on 11 May 2023 an article titled "MEA Smartphone Shipments Fall to Lowest Q1 Level Since 2016" by Yang Wang.  

Chinese brand smartphone shipments to Africa and the Middle East fell 11 percent from the 1st quarter of 2022 compared to the first quarter of 2023.  This is the lowest first quarter shipment since 2016.  Samsung shipments were down slightly while Apple shipments were up 35 percent.  

Popular Chinese Smartphone in Africa Teams Up with Google

 Yicai published on 5 December 2022 an article titled "Chinese Owner of African Hit Phone Brands Tecno, Itel Jumps on Google Partnership" by Xu Wei.  

Transsion Holdings, the leading smartphone supplier in Africa with handset brands Tecno, Itel, and Infinix, announced it will team up with Google on the Android operating system, online advertising, and cloud services.  Transsion will use Google's advertising tools to help transform its digital platform business, improve its advertising monetization, and use Google Cloud to enhance its operational capabilities.  

China Leads Digital Currency Standard Race in Africa

 Coindesk published on 3 February 2021 an analysis titled "China Leads Africa's Digital Currency Race" by Michael Kimani, Cryptobaraza, a builder of fintech, blockchain, and crypto products in Africa.

In Africa there is a race to define a digital currency standard for the emerging digital economy.  The author concludes that China has already won the race with the People's Bank of China's DCEP, a digital version of China's legal tender, the yuan.  Chinese companies had a twenty year head start and effectively subsidized Africa's connectivity.  

Chinese Smartphone Maker Captures African Market

The South China Morning Post published on 1 August 2017 an article titled "How Chinese Smartphone Makers Compete with Samsung and Apple in Overseas Markets" by Meng Jing.

The article reports that Transsion Holdings, a China-based phone maker, has captured more than 40 percent of the mobile phone market in Sub-Saharan African countries by pricing below Samsung and Apple and offering headset features designed specifically for African needs.
