Uganda Cancels Contract with Chinese Railway Company

 Reuters published on 13 January 2023 an article titled "Uganda Drops Chinese Firm from Railway Deal, Eyes Turkish Rival" by Elias Biryabarema.  

Uganda has terminated its contract with China Harbor and Engineering Company to build a railway from the Kenyan border to Kampala, apparently due to the company's inability to obtain financing for the project.  Uganda is now in discussion with a Turkish company.

Extension of Chinese-built Railway from Mombasa to Nairobi Up in Air

Tanzania's The Citizen published on 23 June 2019 an article titled "China Keeps Uganda, Kenya Guessing on SGR Loan" by Frederic Musisi.

Chinese financing has resulted in completion of the standard gauge railway from Mombasa to Nairobi in Kenya. The project was to extend to Kampala, Uganda, and then to Kigali in Rwanda and Juba in South Sudan. Subsequent concerns about the economic viability of the project and the ability of countries to pay off the loan to China have put the expansion of the railway in doubt.

Chinese View of Its Engagement in Africa (in French)

HAL open access archives posted on 2 October 2017 a series of articles titled "La Chine en Afrique vue par elle-meme" by Thierry Pairault.

The articles have been translated from Chinese to French and consist primarily of interviews with Chinese business persons working in Cameroon, Namibia, and the Republic of Congo. The China Harbour Engineering Company is the focus of three of them. While I have previously posted several of the translations, this package brings them all together with an introduction in French and English by Thierry Pairault.

Chinese Port Projects in Walvis Bay, Namibia (in French)

The China Harbour Engineering Company (CHEC) is building a container terminal and an oil terminal at Walvis Bay in Namibia. A Chinese paper published a long interview in Chinese with Feng Yuanfei, CHEC director in Namibia and chief of project. The Chine-Afrique website recently posted a translation in French of the interview titled "Apprentissage, internationalisation, indigenisation" courtesy of Thierry Pairault, Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales.

Cameroun, China and France: Building and Operating a Port (in French)

Presences chinoises en Afrique posted on 3 September 2017 a French translation of a lengthy interview in Chinese with a senior official of the China Harbour Engineering Company (CHEC), which built the Kribi Container Terminal in Cameroun. The translation is titled "La France en Afrique vue par an entrepreneur chinois." The translation is made available courtesy of Thierry Pairault.

The interview sheds light on how CHEC won the contract to build the container terminal at Kribi and the nature of collaboration with French companies--CMA-CGM and Bollore--to operate the terminal.
