China's Health Diplomacy in Africa

 The China-Africa Security Radar posted on 19 June 2026 an article titled "China's Health Diplomacy in Africa: Health Security, Infrastructure, and Strategic Competition" by Lungani Hlongwa.  

A small team of Chinese health experts has arrived in the Democratic Republic of Congo to help the country combat the Ebola outbreak.  This is part of China's long standing health diplomacy in Africa, which follows familiar patterns as the United States cuts back its health care assistance and alters its approach.

China Steps Up Aid to Africa but It Falls Well Short of Filling Gap Left by US

 The South China Morning Post published on 19 April 2026 an article titled "China Steps Up Aid to Africa but Huge Funding Gap Left by Trump's Cuts Remains" by Jevans Nyabiage.

Large cuts in aid to Africa by the Trump administration (and other donors) have left major gaps in funding of essential programs.  China has increased its health diplomacy and donations of food aid but has hardly made a dent in the gap left by Washington and several other donor countries.  

Key Takeaways from Last Forum on China-Africa Cooperation

 Panda Paw Dragon Claw posted on 6 December 2021 an analysis titled "China and Africa's Post-COVID Partnership: Key Takeaways from FOCAC8" by Ma Tianje and Tox Baxter.  

This looks at the recently completed FOCAC conference in Senegal and suggests new trends in the relationship, for example a move away from Chinese financing of huge infrastructure projects in Africa and support for combatting COVID-19 and climate change.  

China's COVID-19 Diplomacy in the Maghreb

 The Middle East Institute published on 23 February 2021 an analysis titled "Chinese Health Diplomacy and the Maghreb in the COVID-19 Era" by Mordechai Chaziza.  

The author summarizes how China has used the donation of COVID-19 vaccine and medical supplies to enhance its relations with the countries in the Maghreb.  

China's Health Diplomacy during Covid-19

 The German Institute for International and Security Affairs published in January 2021 an analysis titled "China's Health Diplomacy during Covid-19: The Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) in Action" by Moritz Rudolf.

The study reviews China's contributions to combat COVID-19 throughout the BRI, including significant efforts in Africa.  Beijing's goal is to be perceived internationally as a "responsible great power."
