Police in Burao arrested KT Media TV reporter Abdiaziz Awl on September 12 without stating the reason for the arrest. The Somaliland Journalists Association claims that more than 20 journalists have been arrested since the beginning of the year.

Somali security personnel have arrested, assaulted, or harassed at least 41 private media journalists since mid-March. The crackdown follows a deteriorating security situation caused by the al-Shabaab terrorist organization.

Libya dismantled an illegal gold mining operation in the desert spearheaded by a Libyan and involving nationals from China, Chad, and Niger. Libyan authorities had earlier arrested dozens of Chinese nationals in a rogue cryptocurrency mining network.

Since April 3, Ethiopian authorities arrested at least 8 journalists, most of them in Amhara Region.

More than 4,500 people have been arrested in Amhara region as of 23 May. Among those arrested are members of the Amhara militia known as Fano, who were accused of some of the worst atrocities in Tigray region.

Ethiopian authorities have arrested at least 14 journalists since declaring a state of emergency on 2 November. The only country in Sub-Saharan Africa with more journalists under arrest is Eritrea.
