China-Africa Artificial Intelligence Cooperation

China and African nations announced last month a plan that outlines initiatives to expand artificial intelligence (AI) research, governance, and capacity-building across the continent. China will host annual China-Africa Digital Economy and Cybersecurity Seminars, offering training in AI data security and new technology applications.

China-Africa Cooperation on Artificial Intelligence

 The Cyberspace Administration of China published on 3 April 2024 an announcement titled "2024 China-Africa Internet Development and Cooperation Forum: Chair's Statement on China-Africa Cooperation on AI."

The China-Africa Internet Development and Cooperation Forum was held online in Xiamen, China on 2-3 April 2024.  The participants held in depth exchanges on China-Africa cooperation on artificial intelligence (AI).  

In 2023, China launched the Global AI Governance Initiative, which is designed to implement its concept of building a community with a shared future for mankind and to realize the Global Development Initiative, the Global Security Initiative, and the Global Civilization Initiative.  

Security Implications of China's Belt and Road Initiative

The National Bureau of Asian Research published in September 2019 a special study titled "Securing the Belt and Road Initiative: China's Evolving Military Engagement Along the Silk Roads" edited by Nadege Rolland, National Bureau of Asian Research.

The seven essays in this study offer a comprehensive look at current Chinese thinking on how to respond to the security risks associated with the global expansion of the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), including into Africa. These contributions present a view of the set of options that are under consideration to enhance the security of China's interests along the BRI routes. Common to all seven essays is the idea that the expansion of China's overseas interests naturally creates the need for military protection.

China Bans the Ivory Trade: Cyberspace Poses Challenge

News China magazine published on 1 February 2017 an article titled "A Dark World" by Wang Yan.

While the government of China recently banned the illegal ivory trade, the article points out it will be difficult to enforce the regulation. Illegal ivory traders have moved their business online to WeChat. Social media platforms such as Alibaba and Tencent have made serious efforts to ensure they are not being used to facilitate the illegal wildlife trade but there is no guarantee they can stop all trading activity.
