Kenya's President Reaches Out to Somali Minority

 Foreign Policy published on 25 June 2026 an article titled "Will Kenya's Ruto Finally Reconcile with the Country's Somali Minority?" by Joseph Maina. 

Kenyan President William Ruto has reached out to the country's minority Somali population to bring them more effectively into Kenyan society.  Some Kenyans are skeptical that Ruto's outreach to the Somalis is sincere.  

Ethiopian Conflict Takes Toll on Diaspora

 TRT World, Turkish state-owned news channel, published on 26 December 2021 an article titled "How Ethiopia War Is Sowing Discord 13,000-km Away Among US Immigrants" by Baba Umar.  

The conflict in Ethiopia is playing out in the Ethiopian diaspora in the United States.  This article looks at the ethnic divisions in the Ethiopian diaspora in the Washington, D.C. area.

The Washington Post published on 13 October 2019 an article titled "'A Place of Ghosts:' Ethiopia Opens Controversial Palace to a Divided Public" by Max Bearak.

The article describes the remaking of the palace of Emperor Menelik II into a museum and a park designed to encourage ethnic unity.

Chinatowns or Chinese Business Districts in Africa?

Pambazuka News published on 5 October 2017 a commentary titled "Chinatowns vs 'Chinatowns' or Chinese Business Districts" by Daouda Cisse, an independent researcher based in Montreal, Canada.

The author argues that references to Chinatowns in Africa are misleading. Unlike the Chinatowns found in North America and Australia, those in Africa are not ethnic enclaves but rather a concentration of Chinese businesses.

Vision 2030: Transforming Kenya into a Middle-income Country

Innovations for Successful Societies at Princeton University published in July 2015 an analysis titled "Planning Transformation in a Divided Nation: Creating Kenya Vision 2030, 2005-2009" by Maya Gainer.  Vision 2030 is an ambitious strategy to transform Kenya into a middle-income country with a high quality of life by 2030.  By 2015, after seven years of development, more than  100 projects were underway and the document stood firm as the road map for Kenya's future development.
