The Sentry published in April 2026 an alert titled "$24M Property Safe Haven in Dubai Linked to the RSF." 

A network of family members, sanctioned individuals, and entities linked to the leadership of Sudan's paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) owns a $24 million real estate portfolio in Dubai consisting of over 20 properties.  These properties, while legal, shed further light on the RSF's relationship with the UAE.

Good News and Bad News for Doing Business in Africa

The World Bank has just released its Doing Business 2019. It evaluates 190 countries/economies globally, including 54 in Africa. The evaluation looks at starting a business, labor market regulation, dealing with construction permits, getting electricity, registering property, getting credit, protecting minority investors, trading across borders, paying taxes, enforcing contracts, and resolving insolvency.

There is good news and bad news for Africa. Out of the ten most improved countries since 2017, five are in Africa. Djibouti is second most improved, Togo sixth, Kenya seventh, Cote d'Ivoire eighth, and Rwanda tenth. The bad news is that only eight African countries rank above the global midpoint: Mauritius (20), Rwanda (29), Morocco (60), Kenya (61), Tunisia (80), South Africa (82), Botswana (86), and Zambia (87). Forty-six African countries rank below the global mid-point and thirteen of the bottom twenty are in Africa.

Land Is One of the Root Causes for Conflict in Somalia

The Rift Valley Institute and the Heritage Institute of Policy Studies published in February 2017 a major study titled "Land Matters in Mogadishu: Settlement, Ownership, and Displacement in a Contested City."

One of the most difficult and sensitive issues in Mogadishu's long process of normalization is competing claims for land. Control and ownership of land and property are among the underlying reasons for Somalia's conflict.

Out of 190 economies surveyed for 2017, Kenya scored number 92 on the overall ease of doing business, an impressive 21 place improvement over its score in 2016. This compares with a score of 74 for South Africa and 115 for Uganda.
