Podcast on China's Relations with Africa

 New Books Network posted on 8 October 2025 a one hour and 43-minute podcast on "China's Relations with Africa: A New Era of Strategic Engagement."

Kanayo Anthony Nomeh, Florida International University, hosted the podcast with the authors of the book, Joshua Eisenman and me.  The podcast covers all aspects of the relationship between Africa and China, although the focus is on security and political issues.

Will China Rely Increasingly on Private Companies for Security in Africa?

 Liechtenstein-based Geopolitical Intelligence Services published on 6 December 2024 a commentary titled "China's Military and Private Security Inroads in Africa" by Frederica Saini Fasanotti.  

As Chinese nationals residing and working in Africa face larger numbers of security threats, the author suggests China will turn increasingly to private security companies to protect them.

Comparing China's Approach to Africa and Latin America

 The Diplomat published on 21 October 2023 a commentary titled "Comparing China's Engagement in Africa and Latin America" by R. Evan Ellis, U.S. Army War College Strategic Studies Center.  

There are far more commonalities than differences in China's approach to Africa and Latin America, but the differences demonstrate how China adapts its policies to different geographic regions.

Chinese Private Security Companies in North Africa and the Middle East

 The Jamestown Foundation published on 28 August 2023 an analysis titled "Chinese PSCs in MENA: The Cases of Iraq and (South) Sudan" by Sergey Sukhankin.

The activities of Chinese PSCs in North Africa and the Middle East are more opaque and limited than in other regions such as Sub-Saharan Africa and Central Asia.
