Fragile Peace in Sudan and Ethiopia Borderlands

 The Rift Valley Institute published on 27 March 2023 a paper titled "Resistance in the Peripheries: Civil War and Fragile Peace in Sudan & Ethiopia's Borderlands."

The government of Ethiopia has historically supported the Sudan People's Liberation Movement/Army (SPLM/A) while the government in Sudan has supported the Benishangul People's Liberation Movement (BPLM) in Ethiopia.  At the moment there is not a military relationship between the SPLM/A and the Ethiopian government.  Since 2020, however, the BPLM has received military support from the Sudanese government and its military.

Building South Sudan from Scratch

The Association for Diplomatic Studies and Training just posted an oral history interview titled "Building a Country from Scratch--The South Sudanese Transition to Independence (2005-2011)." This is an interview with Gerald Hyman in 2016 based on his experience as a USAID officer in South Sudan until 2007. He signaled concerns that South Sudan was not ready for independence.

Can South Sudan's Peace Agreement Be Revitalized?

The Institute for Security Studies (ISS) published on 8 December 2017 an analysis titled "Can South Sudan's Peace Agreement Be Revitalized?" by Meressa K. Dessu, ISS Addis Ababa.

The author concludes that "nothing much" should be expected from the efforts of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development to revitalize the South Sudan peace process other than the possible temporary cessation of hostilities.

What Is South Sudan's Wisdom Courting Russia?

The Juba-based Sudd Institute published on 10 June 2014 a brief commentary titled "What Is South Sudan's Wisdom Courting Russia?" by Abraham A. Awolich, a founding member of the Sudd Institute.  The paper analyzes the emerging relationship between Moscow and Juba.  It suggests that Russia may be willing to block UN sanctions against South Sudan while the United States and China take a tougher position against Juba.
