Gold mining in South Sudan, a medium-size gold producer by African standards, is highly informal and illegal. Gold production is done exclusively by artisanal and small-scale mining methods. All the gold is exported outside formal channels. National and foreign armed groups are involved in its movement. South Sudanese authorities have failed to govern the sector effectively.

The report details the extensive business connections between Sudan's paramilitary Rapid Support Forces and private companies in the UAE.
The Washinton Post published on 30 September 2025 an editorial titled "As the World Ignores Sudan's Suffering, America Has Tools to End It."
The editorial argues that Washington is in a position to end the civil war in Sudan if it chooses to do so. It concludes that "President Donald Trump wants to be known as a peacemaker. Using his leverage to help force a peace deal to end this catastrophic conflict, and restoring Sudan's democratic process, would significantly strengthen his case for the Nobel Peace Prize."
The International Crisis Group posted on 16 April 2025 a 34-minute podcast titled "Sudan's Two Years of Hell" with Alan Boswell and Dallia Mohamed Abdelmoniem, Sudanese political commentator and civil society activist.
Dallia and her family departed Khartoum soon after the war began two years ago and ended up taking refuge in Egypt. She stays in touch with persons who remained in the capital region and follows events closely.
Those who remained in Khartoum describe the situation as "hell on earth" and living in an open prison. People are just trying to make something out of nothing. Ethnic divisions have become more severe and may permanently divide the country. Much of the country has now experienced war crimes committed by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and even if they dislike the Sudan Armed Forces (SAF) they just want to see the end of the RSF. Dallia longs to return to Khartoum but does not envisage an early end to the power struggle between the RSF and the SAF.
Aljazeera's Inside Story posted on 21 December 2024 a 27-minute video titled "Is the US Willing to Take Action against Foreign Powers Fuelling the Sudan War?' with Alex de Waal, World Peace Foundation, Dalia Abdelmoniem, Sudanese political analyst, and Khalood Khair, Confluence Advisory.
The panel concluded that both the Sudan Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), but especially the RSF, are engaging in war crimes. The United Nations and African Union efforts to end the civil war have failed dismally. Russia and the UAE have played especially unhelpful roles. There is little hope for a diplomatic solution, and it is too late for the Biden administration to make a difference.
