China and Russia Agree to Seek New World Order

 The Raisina Hills, an independent digital news platform based in India, published on 20 May 2026 an article titled "Russia-China Challenge Western-led System in Joint Declaration."

The article assesses the joint declaration agreed to by China and Russia released on 20 May during Vladimir Putin's visit with Xi Jinping in Beijing.  The article concludes that "the declaration suggests the Russia-China partnership is evolving beyond tactical cooperation into a broader attempt to shape the ideological architecture of a future world order."

Can China Really Build a New World Order?

 The Diplomat published on 28 September 2023 a commentary titled "Can China Really Build a New World Order?" by Nicholas Bequelin, Yale Law School's Paul Tsai Center on China.  

U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken commented that "China is the only country with both the intent to reshape the international order and the power to do it."  The author concludes that Chinese diplomacy is riven by contradictions, incoherence, and confusion.  Disorder rather than a new Chinese world order is the most likely outcome of current Chinese foreign policy.  

Eritrea Aligns Firmly with Russia, But for What Gain?

 Russia's Sputnik published a series of short articles on the 4-day state visit to Moscow by Eritrean President Isaias Afwerki.

According to Sputnik, Isaias stated that we are entering "a new global order," which Eritrea welcomes;  "the world order is on the verge of a radical transformation, in which Russia could play its part."  Isaias added that "we need to get out of this cycle of containment, containment now, containment of Russia, the containment of China, the containment of Eritrea. . . . NATO will not survive, NATO will not be there."

Modern Diplomacy published on 2 June 2023 a commentary titled "The Strategic Partnership between Eritrea and Russia" by Kester Kenn Klomegah.

It discusses the background of the Eritrea-Russia relationship and prospects for moving forward.

Comment:  There is minimal trade between Russia and Eritrea and Russia has little investment in the country and provides almost no foreign aid. The prospects for increasing trade, aid, and investment are poor.  Eritrea does have a long and strategically located Red Sea coast, which Russia might find attractive for military purposes.  Otherwise, it is difficult to imagine a significantly more important bilateral relationship.  Both Russia and Eritrea seem to agree on the need to replace the current international order.  The question is with what.

Some Africans See Through the Russian/Chinese New World Order

 Aljazeera published on 10 April 2022 a commentary titled "Russia's New World Order Is Bad News for Africa" by Tafi Mhaka, Johannesburg-based political commentator.  

The author noted that Beijing and Moscow are calling for a new multipolar world, but not any reforms that would diminish the enormous influence they have in world affairs.  Putin's popularity is at an irrational and possibly dangerous high in Africa despite the illegality and brutality of Russia's invasion of Ukraine.  Africa does not need the repression of Vladimir Putin and Xi Jinping.  Africa should chart its own world order that is defined by strong, independent, and democratic multilateral institutions.
