Sudan's Killing Fields

 The Washington Post posted on 9 September 2024 an article titled "Videos from Sudan's Killing Fields Reveal Ethnic Hatred Behind Massacres" by Katharine Houreld, Hafiz Haroun, Lucy Provan, Klaas van Dijken, and Maud Jullien.  

The videos underscore the vitriol of Arab militiamen affiliated with the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces toward their Black African victims and the toll of that bigotry.

Stopping Genocide in Sudan

 The Hill published on 22 August 2024 a commentary titled "The World Can't Keep Ignoring the Resurging Genocide in Darfur" by Eric A. Friedman and John Heffernan.  

The authors argue that the civil war in Sudan has spawned a renewal of genocide in Darfur and call on the United Nations and the United States to take stronger measures to end the violence and gain humanitarian access.

Video on Current Crisis in Sudan

 Aljazeera posted on 3 July 2024 a 12-minute video titled "What's Happening in Sudan's Civil War?" narrated by Sandra Gothmann.  

The video summarizes the events that led up to Sudan's civil war and then focuses on the current situation there, especially in the western region of Darfur.  The overriding theme is that the world is not paying sufficient attention to ending the war and the growing humanitarian crisis.

Genocide Looming in Sudan's Darfur Region

 Foreign Policy published on 5 June 2024 a commentary titled "Sudanese Militias Are Committing Genocide--Again" by Mutasim Ali and Yonah Diamond, both at the Raoul Wallenberg Centre for Human Rights.  

The authors argue that genocide is unfolding in Darfur instigated by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces.  They add that the international peace process is not designed to prevent genocide from happening.

Sudan: Fears of Genocide in Darfur

 The Wall Street Journal published on 21 March 2024 an article titled "'We Will Shoot You.' War in Darfur Raises New Fears of Genocide" by Gabriele Steinhauser and photos by Diana Zeyneb Alhindawi. 

The article documents "abuses against civilians on an industrial scale" in Sudan's Darfur region.  The photography is especially poignant and reflective of the horrific situation facing civilians in Darfur.

US Senators Recognize Genocide in Sudan's Darfur

 Four members (two Democrats and two Republicans) of the US Senate Foreign Relations Committee introduced on 13 February 2024 a resolution recognizing the actions of the Rapid Support Forces and allied militias in the Darfur region of Sudan against non-Arab ethnic communities as acts of genocide.

Ongoing Atrocities in Sudan's Darfur Region

 Refugees International published on 1 February 2024 a detailed report titled "Bearing Witness: Atrocities and Looming Hunger in Darfur" by Daniel P. Sullivan.  

Sudan now has the largest number (more than 10 million) of internally displaced persons (IDPs) in the world.  Refugees from Darfur in Chad are overwhelming the humanitarian response.  In December 2023, the United States made an official atrocity designation for Sudan.

Sudan's Cycle of Violence

The Guardian published on 21 November 2023 an article titled "Sudan's Cycle of Violence: 'There Is a Genocide Going on in West Darfur'" by Kaamil Ahmed and Zeinab Mohammed Salih.

As the war between Gaza and Israel consumes the world's press attention, the ongoing conflict in Sudan is generally being ignored.  The situation in Darfur in western Sudan may well constitute genocide.

Sudan Rebels Gain Territory in Darfur

 The Washington Post published on 8 November 2023 an article titled "Rebel Militias Rout Sudanese Army in Darfur, Mass Killings Reported" by Katharine Houreld and Hafiz Haroun.

Three of the five regional capitals in Sudan's Darfur province have fallen to the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces over the past week.  Mass killings have accompanied the fighting with the Sudan Armed Forces.

US Sanctions of Sudan's Rapid Support Forces Depend on UAE

 Foreign Policy published on 21 September 2023 a commentary titled "U.S. Sudan Sanctions Won't Work Without the UAE's Help" by Yasir Zaidan.  

The United States imposed sanctions on the Rapid Support Forces, Sudan's paramilitary group opposing the Sudan Armed forces for control of the country.  But the RSF's vast financial network operates out of the UAE, which must cooperate if the sanctions are to be effective.

Sudan's Darfur: Back to the Future

 Foreign Affairs published on 18 September 2023 an article titled "The New Crisis in Darfur" by Alex de Waal.  

New atrocities in Sudan's Darfur region are reminiscent of the genocide that began in 2003.  The difference is that the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces have replaced the Janjaweed.  A solution hinges now on actions taken by the United Nations, African Union, and United States.

Sudan's Sad History Repeats Itself

 Just Security published on 26 June 2023 a commentary titled "Sudan Today Follows Decades of Justice Denied" by Tirana Hassan.

The brutality Sudanese civilians are enduring today feels like history repeating itself when in the 2010's the military used indiscriminate aerial bombing of populated areas in Southern Kordofan and Blue Nile regions.  It is essential to hold those responsible for past crimes to account to deliver a better future for Sudan.

Sudan: Washington Post Editorial Warns of Genocide in Darfur

 The Washington Post published on 21 June 2023 an editorial titled "Another Genocide Is Brewing in Darfur.  Here Are Some Options to Stop It."

The conflict between the Sudan Armed Forces and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces has spilled over into Darfur in western Sudan and threatens to reignite the area's brutal ethnic cleansing of 20 years ago.  The United States, the International Criminal Court, UN Security Council, Sudan's neighbors in Africa and the Middle East, and the African Union need to intervene to prevent another genocide.

Fighting in Sudan, which has been concentrated in the Khartoum capital region, is spreading increasingly to western Sudan in Darfur and Kordofan and taking on ethnic characteristics.

Challenges on Reporting the Conflict in Sudan

 Columbia Journalism Review published on 14 June 2023 an interview titled "Q & A: Hiba Morgan on the Fighting in Sudan and the Press" by Feven Merid.  

Hiba Morgan, half Sudanese and half South Sudanese Aljazeera Khartoum-based correspondent, discusses the challenges of reporting on the war in Sudan.  She offers insights on reporting that can only be done by someone who is on the ground.  Most of the reporting on the fighting in Khartoum is being done by persons who are not in Khartoum.

Increasingly, fighting in Sudan between the Sudan Armed Forces and paramilitary Rapid Support Forces seems to be shifting to the west in Darfur Region.

There are concerns that Sudan's conflict centered in Khartoum could lead to a civil war in Darfur where militias and armed tribes may exploit a security vacuum.

Tension Builds between Rapid Support Forces and National Army in Sudan

 The Associated Press published on 13 April 2022 an article titled "Sudan's Military Warns of Conflict after Rival Force Deploys" by Jack Jeffery.

Sudan's national army warned of potential clashes with the powerful paramilitary group known as the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), which it said deployed troops in Khartoum and other cities.  Tension between the national army and the RSF is at an all time high.
