Sudan Conflict Impacts Stability in Chad

 The International Crisis Group published on 1 September 2025 an analysis titled "Keeping Chad Stable as Sudan's Conflict Rages."

Chadian support for the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces in neighboring Sudan's war with the Sudan Armed Forces has embroiled Ndjamena in the conflict.  Chad also hosts about 875,000 Sudanese refugees and 300,000 Chadian returnees, creating a humanitarian crisis.  The end of US aid, increasing crime, and ethnic conflict are exacerbating the situation.  The UAE is playing an outsized role in Sudan and Chad.

Washington Post Editorial Calls on US to Stop Genocide in Sudan

 The Washington Post editorial board published on 28 April 2025 a commentary titled "This Time, the U.S. Should Act to Stop a Genocide."  

Earlier this month, the State Department characterized the atrocities being committed in Sudan's western Darfur region as a genocide.  Now that the Trump administration has recognized a genocide is occurring in Sudan, it could halt arms sales to the UAE, and impose sanctions, until the country ends its military and financial support for the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces, the primary perpetrators of the genocide.   

Washington Post Editorial Urges Biden to Pressure UAE on Sudan

 The Washington Post posted an editorial on 28 September 2024 titled "Biden Needs to Pressure the UAE to Help End Sudan's Civil War."

The UAE is the main backer of the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), which is responsible for some of the worst atrocities in Sudan's civil war.  The editorial calls on the Biden administration to pressure the UAE to end this support for the RSF.

Photo Essay on Sudan's Humanitarian Crisis

 The Council on Foreign Relations posted on 19 September 2024 a photo essay titled "Crisis in Sudan, War, Famine, and a Failing Global Response" by Mariel Ferragamo and Sabine Baumgartner.

Making widespread use of photos and maps, the article describes a failing aid response and unsuccessful peace process in efforts to end the tragedy in Sudan.

Video on Current Crisis in Sudan

 Aljazeera posted on 3 July 2024 a 12-minute video titled "What's Happening in Sudan's Civil War?" narrated by Sandra Gothmann.  

The video summarizes the events that led up to Sudan's civil war and then focuses on the current situation there, especially in the western region of Darfur.  The overriding theme is that the world is not paying sufficient attention to ending the war and the growing humanitarian crisis.  

The Battle for Sudan's El Fasher

 The International Crisis Group (ICG) posted on 24 June 2024 an analysis titled "Halting the Catastrophic Battle for Sudan's El Fasher."

A showdown between the Sudan Armed Forces (SAF) and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) is unfolding in Sudan's North Darfur region in the besieged capital of El Fasher.  More than a million civilians are caught up in the conflict.  

The ICG is calling on the United Nations and the United States to mediate a de-escalation of the situation while the UAE presses the RSF to stand down and Egypt and Saudi Arabia do the same with the SAF.  

Sudanese Refugees and IDPs: War or Starvation?

 Aljazeera published on 18 June 2024 an article titled "Starving to Death Is as Scary as the War for Sudanese Refugees" by Mat Nashed.

Three quarters of a million Sudanese refugees are facing "catastrophic levels of hunger" and more than 25 million, including many internally displaced, are facing acute food shortages.  The other option is to remain in a war zone.  These people have a Hobson's choice.  

Genocide Looming in Sudan's Darfur Region

 Foreign Policy published on 5 June 2024 a commentary titled "Sudanese Militias Are Committing Genocide--Again" by Mutasim Ali and Yonah Diamond, both at the Raoul Wallenberg Centre for Human Rights.  

The authors argue that genocide is unfolding in Darfur instigated by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces.  They add that the international peace process is not designed to prevent genocide from happening.  

Sudan: Ethnic Cleansing in West Darfur

 Human Rights Watch published on 9 May 2024 a 218-page report titled "'The Massalit Will Not Come Home': Ethnic Cleansing and Crimes Against Humanity in El-Geneina, West Darfur, Sudan."

The report documents that the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces and their allied mainly Arab militias, including the Third-Front Tamazuj, an armed group, targeted the predominantly Masalit neighborhoods of El Geneina in relentless waves that began in April 2023.  The attackers committed other serious abuses such as torture, rape, and looting.  More than half a million refugees from West Darfur have fled to Chad since the beginning of this violence.

Concern with Genocide in Sudan's Darfur

 Just Security published on 9 May 2024 a commentary titled "The Darfur Genocide Demands International Action and Accountability" by Mutasim Ali and Yonah Diamond, both with the Raoul Wallenberg Center for Human Rights.

The eminent risk of genocide and crimes against humanity in Sudan's North Darfur region begs for international action.  The authors argue that the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces continue to commit genocide against the non-Arab Masalit in West Darfur.  

Washington Post Editorial on Urgent Need to Sustain Diplomacy

 The Washington Post published on 24 April 2024 an editorial titled "Sudan's Second Year of War Brings Little Hope.  The World Should Keep Trying Anyway."

Because of the continuing humanitarian crisis and worsening issues of ethnic cleansing, the editorial staff of the paper argues for the urgent need to sustain high-level diplomacy led by the United States.  Ultimately, Sudan must also have a pathway to return to democratic civilian rule.

Sudan: Fears of Genocide in Darfur

 The Wall Street Journal published on 21 March 2024 an article titled "'We Will Shoot You.' War in Darfur Raises New Fears of Genocide" by Gabriele Steinhauser and photos by Diana Zeyneb Alhindawi. 

The article documents "abuses against civilians on an industrial scale" in Sudan's Darfur region.  The photography is especially poignant and reflective of the horrific situation facing civilians in Darfur.   

Sudan's Rapid Support Forces Enslave Ethnic Africans in Darfur

 The Washington Post published on 23 February 2024 an article titled "Sudanese Militiamen Carry Out Wave of Abductions, Seeking Slaves and Ransom" by Katharine Houreld and Hafiz Haroun.  

The paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), which is composed primarily of Arab militiamen, are abducting mostly African Masalit tribe members in Darfur as forced laborers or as persons to be ransomed.  

US Senators Recognize Genocide in Sudan's Darfur

 Four members (two Democrats and two Republicans) of the US Senate Foreign Relations Committee introduced on 13 February 2024 a resolution recognizing the actions of the Rapid Support Forces and allied militias in the Darfur region of Sudan against non-Arab ethnic communities as acts of genocide.  

Ongoing Atrocities in Sudan's Darfur Region

 Refugees International published on 1 February 2024 a detailed report titled "Bearing Witness: Atrocities and Looming Hunger in Darfur" by Daniel P. Sullivan.  

Sudan now has the largest number (more than 10 million) of internally displaced persons (IDPs) in the world.  Refugees from Darfur in Chad are overwhelming the humanitarian response.  In December 2023, the United States made an official atrocity designation for Sudan.  

International Criminal Court Charges War Crimes in Sudan

 Aljazeera published on 30 January 2024 an article titled "ICC Accuses Sudan and Rebels of Darfur War Crimes."

The head of the International Criminal Court informed the UN Security Council on 29 January that both the Sudan Armed Forces and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces are committing war crimes in western Sudan's Darfur region.  He said the situation in Darfur is "dire by any metric."  

US Determines War Crimes and Ethnic Cleansing in Sudan

 Secretary of State Antony Blinken issued a statement on 6 December 2023 titled "War Crimes, Crimes Against Humanity, and Ethnic Cleansing Determination in Sudan."

The US Department of State has concluded that members of the Sudan Armed Forces and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) have committed war crimes in Sudan.  In addition, members of the RSF and allied militias have committed crimes against humanity and ethnic cleansing.  

Plea to Deal with Human Rights' Atrocities in Sudan's Darfur Region

 The Associated Press published on 27 November 2023 an article titled "A Watchdog Urges UN Security Council to Consider All Options to Protect Sudan's Darfur Civilians" by Samy Magdy.

Human Rights Watch has called on the UN Security Council to take all necessary steps to end the human rights' atrocities in Darfur by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces and Arab militias.  

Sudan's Darfur Faces All-out Ethnic War

Aljazeera published on 22 November 2023 an article titled "Fears of All-out Ethnic War Rise in Sudan's Darfur" by Mat Nashed.

 The on-going fighting in Darfur will most likely turn into an all-out ethnic based conflict.  Five mostly non-Arab armed militia known as the Joint Protection Forces have banded together to protect the last remaining part of Darfur region from the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces.

Sudan's Cycle of Violence

The Guardian published on 21 November 2023 an article titled "Sudan's Cycle of Violence: 'There Is a Genocide Going on in West Darfur'" by Kaamil Ahmed and Zeinab Mohammed Salih.

As the war between Gaza and Israel consumes the world's press attention, the ongoing conflict in Sudan is generally being ignored.  The situation in Darfur in western Sudan may well constitute genocide.
