China Orders Evacuation of Four Provinces in DRC

 The South China Morning Post published on 7 August 2024 an article titled "China Warns Citizens to Leave DR Congo after Series of Deaths and Kidnappings" by Jevans Nyabiage.

China has asked its citizens and companies to "immediately stop operations and evacuate" 4 provinces in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo as a result of kidnappings and attacks on Chinese nationals.

Conflict in Sudan's Darfur Results in Refugees in Chad

 The New York Times published on 16 May 2023 an article titled "Fleeing Generals at War and Violent Militias, Many Say 'We're Not Coming Back'" by Elian Peltier.

The conflict in Sudan is giving rise to growing numbers of refugees from Darfur region to Chad, a poor country that is ill prepared to handle Sudanese refugees.

Sudan Faces State Disintegration

 The Carnegie Endowment for International Peace published on 3 May 2023 a commentary titled "The Looming Danger of State Disintegration in Sudan" by Amr Hamzawy.

The author concluded that Sudan is severely at risk for state failure and disintegration.  Sudan can be saved from this fate only if regional and international actors work to integrate the militias in the national army and facilitate talks between military and civilian groups.  

Somalia: Al-Shabaab Under Increased Pressure

 The International Crisis Group posted on 11 January 2023 a 35 minute podcast titled "Somalia's Offensive against Al-Shabaab" with Omar Mahmood and Alan Boswell.

Over the past few months, Somali government forces have consolidated gains against al-Shabaab in a large-scale offensive in central Somalia initiated by local clan militias.  At the same time, the government is confronting a serious drought.  

Situation in Libya: Discussion with China Radio International

China Radio International broadcast on 5 August 2014 a 25 minute program on the situation in Libya.  It consists of three separate interviews with Flynt Leverett, Pennsylvania State University, Li Guofu, China Institute of International Studies, and myself.  The focus was on the effects of Western intervention in 2011 and whether Libya can extricate itself from its current troubles. 

South Sudan and Darfur

Foreign Affairs published on 1 May 2014 an eclectic piece titled "Out for Gold and Blood in Sudan" by Jerome Tubiana, analyst for Sudan and South Sudan.  The article offers especially useful information on the Sudan government sponsored Haras-al-Hodud or border guard in Darfur.  Concerning Darfur, Tubiana concludes that "it would be reductive to simply blame the government's militia strategy.  There is plenty of blame to go around.  The government, the rebels, and all the other players need to work together to stop the violence in all Sudan's peripheries."

Tubiana also gave an interview titled "Soudan du Sud" in French to Channel Africa dated 25 April 2014 on the difficulties of the  South Sudan peace process and the consequences of the war on South Sudan.
