UN Report on Foreign Fighers and Weapons Supporting Sudan War

 The UN Human Rights Council published on 1 September 2026 a report of the independent international fact-finding mission for Sudan titled "Fuelling Sudan's Conflict: Weapons, Fighters, and External Support Networks."

This is the most detailed UN report so far detailing external support for the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and the Sudan Armed Forces (SAF).  It discusses Columbian mercenaries supporting the RSF, including the launching of drones, and the assistance of individuals and entities in the UAE.  It also identifies support received by the RSF from individuals or entities in Libya, Chad, Ethiopia, South Sudan, and Puntland in Somalia.  It identifies less external support for the SAF but notes the use of drones manufactured in Turkey.  

It concludes that external support is sustaining military operations and expanding the capabilities of both the RSF and SAF, with grave consequences for civilians.  Increasingly sophisticated drone capabilities enabled both sides to strike far beyond immediate front lines.  The report called for the Security Council to extend the arms embargo now imposed on Darfur throughout Sudan.   

Sudan: A Tour of the Devastation in Khartoum and Omdurman

 The Economist published on 6 August 2026 an article titled "The Ruin of Sudan."

Based on a visit to Khartoum and Omdurman, the article shows the devastation caused by more than three years of war between the Sudan Armed Forces (SAF) and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces.  The SAF is now in control of the capital region.  

Fall of City in Central Sudan Could Result in Partition of Country

 World Politics Review published on 13 July 2026 an article titled "Sudan Could Be Headed for De Facto Partition" by Mohamed Wad Al-Sak.  

If the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces take control of El Obeid in central Sudan from the Sudan Armed Forces (SAF), it could result in a de facto partition of the country.  El Obed is the SAF's last command center in central Sudan and the linchpin of its western supply corridor.

UN Report on Hallmarks of Genocide in Sudan

 The UN Human Rights Council published on 8 July 2026 a 26-page report titled "Information Supplementing the Report 'Sudan: Hallmarks of Genocide in El Fasher'."

This report provides detailed references not included in the initial 19 February 2026 report and additional information that the UN Human Rights Council gathered following continued investigations since the publication of the original report.  

It also helps develop the legal basis for the conclusions that were drawn in the original report, that the mass killings and related atrocities committed by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces in and around El Fasher were indicators of a genocidal path.

Fears of Another Massacre in Sudan

 The BBC posted on 7 July 2026 an article titled "Fears of a Massacre in This City on the Frontline of Sudan's War" by Akisa Wandera.

El Obeid, capital of North Kordofan has been under siege by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) for 18 months.  Most recently, the RSF has stepped up the use of drones.

The United Nations believes another human rights catastrophe like the one in El Fasher is unfolding in El Obeid.  The Sudan Armed Forces continues to control the city, but its hold is weakening as it faces increasing RSF drone attacks.  

Amnesty International's Massive Report on Atrocities in Sudan's North Darfur

 Amnesty International published on 1 July 2026 a report titled "City Under Seige, Children Under Fire: Rapid Support Forces' Crimes Against Humanity in North Darfur."

This is a 202-page report on the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) atrocities in North Darfur based on 247 interviews, including 208 with survivors of the RSF seizure of El Fasher, capital of North Darfur.

UN Security Council Sanctions 4 Commanders in Sudan's Rapid Support Forces

 The Associated Press published on 25 February 2026 an article titled "UN Sanctions 4 Commanders in Sudan's Paramilitary Force Accused of Atrocities in Sudan" by Edith M. Lederer."

The UN Security Council imposed sanctions on 4 commanders of Sudan's paramilitary Rapid Support Forces suspected of atrocities against civilians.  They face UN travel bans and financial freezes.  

UN Report Suggests Rapid Support Forces Genocide in Sudan

 UN News published on 19 February 2026 an article titled "Sudan: 'Hallmarks of Genocide' Found in El Fasher, UN Investigators Detail Mass Killings and Ethnic Targeting" by Vibhu Mishra.

The paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) carried out ethnically targeted killings, widespread sexual violence, and enforced disappearance during their late-October takeover of El Fasher in Sudan's Darfur Region.  They committed three underlying acts of genocide, which is the only reasonable inference you can take from the RSF killings.  

War in Sudan Becomes Increasingly Regional

 Foreign Affairs published on 8 January 2026 an article titled "The War that Outgrew Sudan: Middle East Countries Are Turning a Local War into a Regional Crisis" by Alex de Waal.  

Last summer, it looked like the Trump administration might make a serious effort to end the conflict in Sudan.  That effort has stalled and the civil war in Sudan is becoming a wider regional conflict that increasingly includes Middle Eastern countries.  

Sudan Conflict Only Worsens in December

 Aljazeera published on 31 December 2025 an article titled "War in Sudan: Humanitarian Collapse, Fighting, Deadlock, December 2025" by Mohammad Mansour.

The humanitarian situation in Sudan deteriorated to a new low following a collapse of international funding, although the European Union launched an air bridge to deliver supplies to Darfur.  Kordofan province became the new epicenter for fighting as both the Sudan Armed Forces and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces relied increasingly on the use of drones.  All attempts to end the conflict through negotiation appeared to be stalled.  

Photojournalist Essay of Atrocities in Sudan's Darfur

 The New York Times published on 20 December 2025 a photojournalism piece titled "Escape from the Abyss: Surviving the Atrocities in El Fasher."

An estimated 100,000 people left El Fasher, the capital of North Darfur, after it fell to the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF).  This left an estimated 150,000 remaining in the city and subject to RSF atrocities.  

Sudan: Rapid Support Forces Atrocities in Darfur

 The Washington Post published on 12 December 2025 an article titled "In Sudan, Thousands Held Hostage for Ransom -- And Killed if They Can't Pay" by Katharine Houreld and Hafiz Haroun.  

Following the capture of the capital of North Darfur, El Fasher, by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) from the Sudan Armed Forces, the RSF has engaged in horrific atrocities as documented in this account. 

Charging War Crimes in Sudan

 Foreign Policy published on 21 November 2025 an article titled "Documenting War Crimes in Sudan Begins Now" by Janine di Giovanni, Reckoning Project.

The evidence of war crimes in Darfur Region of Sudan is visible by satellite imagery from space.  It is supported by witness accounts.  The challenge now is to use the evidence in a court system and bring the perpetrators to justice.  

International Pressure Needed to End Sudan Conflict

 Foreign Policy published on 20 November 2025 an article titled "The Dire Need for International Pressure to End the War in Sudan" by John Haltiwanger.

The secretary-general of the Danish Refugee Council, Charlotte Slente, recently met with Sudanese refugees in eastern Chad.  She concluded that the international community must put pressure on the belligerents in Sudan to end the atrocities and genocide.  

The West Just Watches Genocide in Sudan's Darfur Region

 Newsweek published on 18 November 2025 a commentary titled "Sudan's Genocide Is Happening in Plain Sight--and the West Is Enabling It" by Faisal Kutty, Canadian journalist.

The paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) are openly committing genocide in Sudan's Darfur Region.  Western governments denounce the killings but support the UAE, which is assisting the RSF.

Prioritizing Sudan Policy in Washington

 Brookings published on 12 November 2025 a commentary titled "Sudan's Deadly Divide: The RSF and SAF's Reign of Terror" by Jeffrey Feltman, former US special envoy for the Horn of Africa. 

Referring to the Sudan Armed Forces and paramilitary Rapid Support Forces conflict as "fratricide," the author has disdain for both belligerents.  If the Trump administration hopes to achieve a cease fire, it needs to shift Sudan to a higher priority on Washington's already crowded agenda, including direct intervention by President Trump.   

Ending Sudan's War

 The International Crisis Group (ICG) published on 14 November 2025 a statement titled "After El Fasher: Ending Sudan's Atrocious War."

The ICG concludes that to get a cease fire and make it stick, the Trump administration will simultaneously have to persuade Abdel Fattah al-Burhan to take the deal proposed by the Quad (US, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and UAE) over the objections of his shaky domestic coalition and insist that the UAE throttle back patronage for the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces. The ICG also noted the Quad will need to devote a united effort to achieve this goal and ensure the eventual creation of a civilian government.  

US Identifies Rapid Support Forces as Villain in Sudan

 The Middle East Eye published on 13 November 2025 an article titled "Marco Rubio: US Knows Who Is Arming Sudan's RSF and It Must End" by Oscar Rickett.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the time has come to cut off arms to Sudan's paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF).  The US knows who is supplying the RSF and is prepared to put pressure on them to end the supply.

Only American Pressure Can End the Killing in Sudan

 Foreign Affairs published on 6 November 2025 a commentary titled "Terror Returns to Darfur: Only American Pressure Can Stop the Killing in Sudan" by Alex de Waal, World Peace Foundation.  

The author has studied and worked in Sudan for 40 years.  He concludes that "however terrible the war and its consequent famine in Sudan is today, it can still get much worse."  He argues that only strong US pressure and the personal engagement of President Trump can end the fighting.  

Sudan Is in Free Fall

The New York Times published on 6 November 2025 a commentary titled "Sudan Is in Free Fall" by Eric A. Friedman, Suad Abdel Aziz, and John Prendergast. 

The most catastrophic phase of the conflict in Sudan is occurring in El Fasher, the capital of North Darfur recently captured by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF).  The most immediate step required to dial back the violence is for the UAE to stop supplying arms and support to the RSF.
